Which social media platform is best for your business?

It’s 2019.  You own a small business. Your company is getting pressure (either from customers, partners, employees, or friends) to join the social media universe.  Where do you start?

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to social media platforms for your business.  In this article, our friends at Constant Contact explain that different factors (i.e. industry, staff resources, goals) can determine which platform is best for you.

First, think about your product or service.  Is it visual? Do you have great photo content on hand? Instagram might be a good place to start.  Is your company B2B (business-to-business)? LinkedIn might be a better bet. Do you have enough content for daily updates?  If not, there’s no reason to have a Twitter.

Second, consider your staff resources.  How much time can you (or a staff-person) dedicate to social media weekly?  This includes finding/generating content, developing a posting schedule, posting, and engaging with your audience (liking, commenting on, and sharing posts).

If you don’t have a marketing or communications staff-person to work on social media, it might make sense to outsource it.  If you’re not sure how much time you’ll need to allocate to social media, reach out to us and we can help you design a plan/budget based on your needs and goals.

Next, decide on one platform to start with.  This quiz from Constant Contact will help you choose one.

Before you “go live,” you will want to generate and compile a couple weeks of content to get you started.  For more on this, see our earlier blog post, 6 Tips to Get You Started with Social Media.

Social media can be intimidating and feel like just another project you can’t take on -- but if used correctly, it is a smart investment that can propel your business to the next level, and help you reach a wider audience.
