Whether you are an entrepreneur presenting to financial investors or a freelancer trying to land a new client, it's all about the pitch deck. The content and design of these slides can determine whether or not you close this opportunity. With the right deck, you can hold your audience’s attention long enough to explain why they should work with you. Here are a few ways you can accomplish that.

Treat your pitch deck like a story

Layer your deck like a story so that it flows. You don’t want to start off with the results of your theory without laying out the proposed strategy. Start off with the problem or issue, flow into the potential solution, and from there proceed to the results and end with any financial analysis or other data. This will keep you organized and on track.

Make it look polished and consistent

Don’t overdo the design elements, because that can take the attention away from your overall message. Keep it clean, polished, and most importantly: easy to follow. And always keep your audience in mind. For example, if you are presenting to a client you already work with, it might also be appropriate to use elements from their branding guide in your pitch deck.

Don’t overcomplicate it

Do not overcomplicate your work with unnecessary language or industry jargon. Avoid using words that you personally don’t understand. The last thing you want to do is cause any confusion in your presentation, or run into a situation where someone asks a question you can’t properly answer.

Be authentic

The most important thing that will make for a awesome pitch deck: you! Be yourself and be authentic. Personality can get you a long way. Take the wonderful information you’ve prepared and show your potential client or investor why you would be great to work with.
